Let’s just say it—I’m not the poster child for holiday cheer. The twinkling lights? Meh. The endless carols? Overplayed. And don’t even get me started on the crowds at the mall. If there’s a spectrum of holiday spirit, The Grinch is probably my spirit animal.
But here’s the thing: even the Grinch had a change of heart. Somewhere between dodging ugly sweater parties and politely declining yet another cookie exchange, I’ve realized there’s still a way to embrace the holiday season—even if you’re not naturally brimming with cheer.
This post is for all the reluctant revelers out there. Let’s talk about how to survive, maybe even enjoy, the holidays without losing our wonderfully grinchy selves in the process.
1. Set Boundaries with Holiday Overload
Holiday spirit doesn’t mean you have to say “yes” to everything. Love a quiet night in? Skip the 18th holiday party invite. Hate Secret Santa? Opt out gracefully. Saying “no” to the things that drain you is one way to preserve your energy for what actually matters.
Your holidays, your rules.
2. Focus on What Feels Good
Maybe decking the halls isn’t your thing, but baking cookies or binging classic holiday movies in your pajamas is. (Looking at you, Home Alone.) Find the little traditions that make you smile—even if they’re unconventional—and make those your holiday highlights.
3. Simplify Gift Giving
Feeling overwhelmed by gift shopping? Join the club. Instead of hunting down the perfect gift for everyone, focus on thoughtful simplicity. Homemade treats, heartfelt cards, or even just spending quality time with loved ones can mean just as much (if not more). And honestly, ask yourself, what’s one gift you bought your kiddos last year that made it through the entire year?
Also, let’s normalize gift cards. Seriously, they’re a lifesaver.
4. Celebrate the Small Stuff
The holidays don’t have to be about grand gestures or Pinterest-perfect decor. Sometimes it’s the small, quiet moments that matter most: a hot cup of cocoa, a cozy blanket, or the sparkle of lights on a chilly evening.
Give yourself permission to enjoy the season in bite-sized, manageable doses.
5. Give a Little Cheer
Here’s where I take a page from the Grinch’s book: giving can actually feel pretty great. And it just so happens to be my favorite part. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering, or simply being extra kind to the frazzled barista at your favorite coffee shop, spreading a little holiday cheer can do wonders for your mood.
If you are following me over on Instagram you know that we are encouraging a #SpreadKindness challenge. Head on over and give me a follow if you aren’t already and jump on the Spread Kindness challenge. We could all use a little extra this time of year.
So, here’s to embracing the holidays in your own perfectly imperfect way. You don’t need to go full Cindy Lou Who to enjoy the season. Start small, be true to yourself, and let a little holiday magic sneak in where it may.
Who knows? By the time the new year rolls around, you might even find your heart growing three sizes. 🎄
How do you embrace the holidays when you’re not feeling super festive? Share your tips—I’m always looking for new ways to make the season brighter (with minimal tinsel).
